Chapter 11

After they dropped Derek off at his car, Dani and Dee set back out into the city. Dani propped one foot up onto the leather seat so she could lean her elbow on it as she stared out the window, watching the buildings march by as more and more of the streetlights clicked on in anticipation of the evening.

“Okay?” Dee asked her, glancing over before turning her attention back to the road.

Dani pulled her gaze away from the window and let out a sigh. “I honestly don’t know.”

“Do you want to order pizza?” Dee said. “Or we could go back to my place if that would make you more comfortable.”

“I want to sleep with my own pillow,” Dani decided, smiling tiredly. “Thanks for coming over.”

“What are friends for?” Dee reached over and patted her knee, and Dani clutched her friend’s hand for a second before she let go and folded her hands in her lap.

Dani’s apartment wasn’t all that far from Dee’s, and it only took them about ten minutes to amble through the streets and pull into one of the extra spots in the little lot. Dani glanced around as she climbed from the car. Did Orson know where she lived? She’d never given him her address or even hinted at where she lived. But surely, he had people who could find that sort of thing out with ease.

She shook herself, trying to force the anxiety away, though it had sunk its claws deep into her spine and wouldn’t let go. She looped her elbow through Dee’s as they walked toward the door, pulling her friend close. She punched the code into the keypad by the door, and it buzzed the two of them through.

Dani’s apartment was on the ground floor, which she’d never really liked to begin with, but now, she was all the more aware of how easy it was for someone to peek in through the windows or break the latch and climb right in.

Dani and Dee filed into the apartment, and Dani immediately turned to lock the door and throw the deadbolt. Then, before she even took her shoes off, she walked around the entire place to check the clasps on all the windows and draw the blinds tight, peering out at the very, very slowly gathering dusk each time before she dropped the shutters. Then she went over the windows a second time before she finally sat down on the armchair, dropping to the plush cushion with a huge sigh, splaying her legs out in front of her.

“The usual?” Dee asked her, referring to pizza. She already had her phone out and was ready to order.

Dani nodded. Now that she was sitting down, exhaustion was flooding through her body, turning her limbs to leaden weights, her eyelids like stones upon her face. Dee came over and slapped her leg.

“Hey, go change before you fall asleep,” Dee suggested. “You’ll feel better if you do.”

Dani understood the logic of that, but damn, did it seem like so much work.
